Treats

[edit | edit source]

Is this really a treat?

[edit | edit source]

2 point treats.

  • It's a free dinner, right on your bed! ...oh god it's putrid and it's not even on any plates you are never getting the smell out—
  • A literal plague of flies. They are harmless besides being irritating, but will attempt to coat every surface with writhing, buzzing bodies. And while they will not remain strictly contained to your bedroom, they will also prefer it even when offered other avenues of escape. If you're the right soul type, maybe this counts as a snack? Any surviving flies will abruptly drop dead within a day.
  • A set of cooking paraphernalia (a couple pots, pans), inscribed with unreadable lettering. When food is placed inside, the markings will glow and they will begin to heat up all on their own accord! (So be careful to place them somewhere that can withstand heat!) The only drawback is that they will always overcook, burn, or otherwise make unappetizing anything you try to prepare in them. The result is usually still edible... just not very good.
  • A collection of kitschy, personalized mugs. There's like twenty of them. They all have some stranger's blurry face (different people, probably human), along with varying incomprehensible text printed in a somehow obnoxious font. They are completely harmless.
  • A small amount of money! ...It's nothing like what's used in Karteria—or indeed, anywhere on Pathos (money these days isn't physical, silly!)—and any attempts to have it appraised judge it to be worthless. It looks pretty old though.
  • A similar item along the above lines. Suggest your own, if you want to. For some reason.

Small Treat

[edit | edit source]

25 point treats

  • A small, non-magical item from home. On closer inspection, it's actually just a replica. ...Not even a very good one, as though the work of someone who'd only heard a description of it. And who wasn't a very good artisan.
  • A handheld mirror that displays only your very best self. Goodness, but you are radiant. It's hard to look away... and why would you want to? This is perfection, right here. ...Managing to resist its lure (or being forcefully dragged away) will inflict either overwhelming grief or wrath at being denied your visage, for upwards of an hour. Any future attempts to use the mirror, and it will just be a mirror. The special effect works once per beholder.
  • An electric bike. It will require occasional charging, or else it will turn into: a normal bike. When charged, in addition to helping convey you, it also has an onboard GPS, complete with a map, the ability to input your destination, and directions read out to you in a mellow robotic voice. ...The language isn't anything you've heard, the maps for Karteria (and indeed, all of Orexis) don't exist, and trying to put in local data only causes it to error out. (Probably? The robot voice is apologetic.) Nevertheless! It is: a bike.
  • A magical weapon that least suits your character's abilities. If the character has never shown any particular capabilities, it would match whatever you think they would be terrible with. (It cannot be something like a rocket launcher, or anything too destructive.) The weapon is magical in the sense that it imparts whoever holds it with a profound sense of confidence that they are an expert at this. And along with that confidence comes an insistence that others must recognize them. They will be determined to show off what they can do, and the effect will only end when they either hear a (non-sarcastic) compliment... or the weapon draws blood. Injuring themself counts. The effect only works once per wielder, and only comes into play when the person holding it is an absolute beginner at it. This is the only way the weapon is magical, and in all other aspects is merely average.
  • A small amount of money! ...This too is nothing like what's used in Pathos today, but the materials used are semi-valuable so you can trade them in for Real Money. Value equivalent to a single month's stay in a modest residence, or six months somewhere awful.
  • A similar item along the above lines. Suggest your own, if you have an idea for something that might fit.

Medium Treat

[edit | edit source]

50 point treats

  • A pair of rings/bracelets/earrings. Giving one to a loved one will allow you to sense their location (and vice-versa). Accurate within a 5-mile radius, but accuracy decays rapidly outside of that. Sharing the items with a non loved one scrambles the accuracy completely. The jewelry comes with a note which explains all of this... but it's written in a long-dead language.
  • An enchanted pair of wineglasses. Once per day, at sunset, they will refill with a draught of... genuinely exceptional quality! (If a character does not like wine, or does not know anything about it, this will not impart any love or knowledge for it.) Truly a boon for the sophisticated, those trying to look that way, and those who just want a drink. While you're free to consume both (or neither, considering how suspicious this is), there are two and they are better shared... and drinking it with a companion will compel you to say something nice about the other person (and the same goes for them). That's it. The effect will renew daily, until the glasses are broken. (If you consume both, alone, you will say something nice about yourself.)
  • A large, plush massage chair. It vibrates! And seems to be magical in some way, given that it's operating without an external source of energy. This is because it saps the energy of anyone who chooses to sit in it and activate its 'features'. The character will be drawn into a nap of 1-4 hours, lulled into unconsciousness by mechanical thrumming. While asleep, they may have a dream about someone they'd been thinking about lately—and they're likely to be behaving in an uncharacteristically favorable way. Like their messy roommate finally doing the goddamned dishes. The character will wake up refreshed, and with their sores eased, though. Being extricated from the chair before the dream session is up will leave a character disoriented and woozy, but they'll be otherwise unharmed.
  • A set of magical stationery. The style matches something your character would like, in some vague way—like your aunt had been told of your interests and was trying their best. Any attempt to use the set will cause the character to go into a trance state and write out a poetic forecast of the week on a single page. The fortune is accurate, if vague and misleading (as all good fortunes are): apart from one day which is completely wrong. The set comes with ten pages, and trying to use it more than once a week will lead to only writing gibberish (and wasting a page). The pen will last for longer than that, but when separated from the paper it's just a normal pen (maybe a cute one).
  • A fairly large amount of money! ...Once again, no one can recognize where it originated, but appraisers are far more interested in it, and will offer you a fair price. Value equivalent to three months rent in a modest residence.
  • A similar item along the above lines. Suggest your own or ask for something special.

Luxury Treat

[edit | edit source]

100 point treats

  • Teleportation mirrors. The character receives a set of two large, ornate mirrors. They are each 200cm tall, and twice as wide as an average human. Hopefully you have space for them. And while they each function as perfectly normal reflective surfaces, sending an object through one will cause it to pop out of the other. It works both ways, and is safe to use with both living and non-living entities. Passing through one feels a bit like going underwater—apart from the lack of being wet.
  • A replica of an object from home. It is still identifiably not the original, but exceptionally similar. When held, it can trigger a memory associated with the object—though with the parts all played by people who also aren't quite right. Anyone who touches the item will experience the vision, not only the owner. Multiple memories can be triggered by the same item.
  • A strikingly well-made statuette of your character's Natural Soul. It is somewhat stylized in form, but feels eerily accurate all the same. Characters may notice that it feels magical in nature, but interacting with it will accomplish nothing. However, should a character find themselves in a situation incompatible with life... they will not die. Their body will be restored to full health—or more accurately, rewound to its pre-dead (and pre-wounded, if applicable) state. The statuette—wherever it might be—will be shattered, and the pieces turned to inert stone. (This naturally only works once, so if the character persists in whatever activity got them killed in the first place... well.) The statuette is otherwise resistant to damage, though not immune to it. Should it end up broken by some other means, however, the character will die in its place, and the statuette will emerge unscathed—but now without power. One way or another, their fates are connected.
  • A rather small amount of money. ...God, the appraisers are fascinated by it though, as the materials used are far purer than anything available today, and the distinct plating— ...well. Due to their poor ability to contain their interest, prospectors will be forced to give you a good price for these. Value equivalent to six months in a modest residence, or three somewhere fancy. Or you can live in a car and blow it on something cool.
  • A similar item along the above lines. Suggest your own or request... Special Treatment.

Limited Edition Treat

[edit | edit source]

400 point treats

  • Soul not feeling crowded enough? At first, everything is much like the warning before any other mysterious present; a sense of grief, a fragment of a melody. But rather than find any material object at home, the character will feel a blinding pain in their neck—right where their Augmenter is located. It's excruciating, but brief—and may come with additional auditory hallucinations, which will be clarified on taking this option. Whether they faint or grimly bear it, the agony soon passes and your character will discover they're now the host for a second Natural Soul. What they're saddled with is entirely up to player choice, though the mods can also pick one at random if you'd prefer. Over a similar period as the first, this soul will also force its traits on the character. In places where said traits are mutually exclusive (i.e., fur versus scales), the player can choose which are fully expressed, and which are blended. This is not Patho-Gen sanctioned. If you turn to them afterward they will be bewildered—and alarmed—at the presence of an additional soul within your Augmenter. They will not be able to remove it. ...Though they may try.
  • Alternatively, should you decide that your character's current Natural Soul does not suit them—and you've already used your free switch—you may swap their soul out once again. This method is not Patho-Gen sanctioned, and nor does it involve them. As with the character's first switch, they will fall badly ill—but this time, even should they submit themselves to Patho-Gen immediately, the change will have already happened on its own. The old soul has slipped away, or otherwise expired. And something... new has taken its place. Has a stray soul somehow elbowed out the old? The doctors have no explanation for it—none that they'll share with you, anyway. They will be very suspicious of you, though. Why are you chewing through so many souls?

Player Suggested Treats and Special Treatment

[edit | edit source]
Character Date Tier Treat
Momo (yesdoubt) 2025-07-14 Luxury treat (special treatment) And what Momo receives is... a vending machine. Hopefully he has the space for it, wherever he's living, but it will attempt to turn up in a reasonably convenient nook. Karteria has vending machines, but this doesn't look like them; it's simultaneously futuristic and retro, mildly glowing to itself without even being plugged in.

Does one dare to consume The Snacks? At a glance, this is easier said than done, as the machine does not interact with the Syntrofos whatsoever, and the symbols on the machine (Instructions? Advertisements?) are unreadable. It only takes specific physical currency- the same sort of coins that turn up in all levels of treat, as it turns out, and it can't be tricked into accepting anything else. Without coins to spend, what does one do? Shaking the machine will not cause anything to fall loose.

Fortunately, once a day the vending machine will abruptly vend one of its items at random. It's a food/drink machine, so there might be chips, cookies, crackers, soda-like beverages, and similar. The labels are bright and colorful, and everything is entirely safe to consume. The flavors are familiar, if not quite right.

Eating any of these treats provides a minor healing effect. It is slight; a small wound will heal faster, an itch will depart, a sore back will be a bit less sore. They're not going to cure anyone of illness, and you can't slap a snack cake on a mortal wound, but they will leave the consumer a little better off than before. If there's nothing physically wrong, they will feel emotionally better. Any fur/scales/feathers will come in a little glossier. These boosts will work on anyone who eats them, so Momo is free to share his snacks if he wishes (or if someone comes in and steals them).

There is a month's supply of 'goods' within the vending machine, and it will be restocked once a month. (So if Momo (or anyone else) used treat-currency to empty the thing at once, he could, but he'd have to wait a month for it to refill.)

If coins are ever deposited, there does not be any way of accessing wherever they end up. If a non-appropriate coin-shaped-object is inserted, it will be consumed to no effect. If the machine is broken- such as smashing through the glass-like front- then all the current treats can be accessed at once, but it will no longer refill.

Eli (visciousabyss) 2025-10-24 Small Treat, Medium treat

and I have two PROPOSALS, given that Winter Is Coming and Eli has a plant bf and they only have solar power out in da woods lol. Feel free to edit/add weird quirks to these.

50?- magical woodstove (for heat, & with stovetop for cookin)- maybe clap on/clap off? lmao. powered by magic or katalyth or friendship or Eli's eternal rage or whatever idk

25?- magical sunlamp, perhaps it only works at night, powered same way as stove

And both the woodstove/sunlamp sound great, and could be powered as you see fit. But if you'd like, the stove, were it dissected, contains trace amounts of Katalyth artfully twined up in its metals and wiring. It's quite an advanced construction- more complicated than the appliances that can be bought in Karteria (and which surely don't run on Katalyth these days). It's also sufficiently insulated so that it's not going to ruin anyone's mood to be nearby. But it is reactive to emotions in the vicinity, so Eli could very well charge it by being mad in its presence. (All emotional states will provide it energy, and it's quite efficient at converting them.)

(He could also just put actual wood in the woodstove and burn something other than bad feelings.)

(The woodstove also arrives with those valuable coins stuffed inside it. Hopefully Eli finds them before trying to use the thing... but the metal is actually really resistant and would survive being burned by most methods anyway. And cooking it smells awful.)

The sunlamp works similarly to the stove, but as it's smaller, it's less effective in some way, such as only working at night, as suggested, or only able to hold a charge for a few hours at a time before needing to cool down.

Northly (northling) 2025-11-19 Luxury Treat

Luxury treat? Could Northly get some glasses that show basic item stats and descriptions from her world? Anything too plot/Karteria specific I figure could get redacted — show up as black bars — and she would never ever use it on a person (apart from a young child, that's a big cultural no-no) but it also wouldn't work on living animals/things equivalent to living animals (aka the plant creatures) but would give things like:

Rock

Class: blunt projectile Strength: 1 Durability: 3 Alignment: Void

Simple. Efficient. Classic. Rock.

for a palm sized stone.

Potentially would give other characters from game settings their version of the stats if they were to wear them?

Idk, I'm flexible! But mostly it would be neat to have Northly occasionally spout silly flavour text.

That would count as a luxury treat! But glasses as described, with those caveats/limitations sound entirely doable. And other characters wearing the glasses could have the information translated into their version/style of it, yes!

Miscellaneous things to note: looking at Katalyth through the glasses will display stats (as it is not a living thing or equivalent) but both the categories and any numerical values are completely glitched out. Different pieces of Katalyth will have different glitches, but there's nothing to decipher from them. Rather than redacted, it's like... a completely incompatible format. If it had sound it would be screeching.

Looking at anything in Kelesis: the font will change to something cute and friendly like comic sans. The glasses will continue to 'function', in that stats sure will come up when she looks at things, but the stats are not likely to make sense, and will frequently include emojis. The tone throughout will be enthusiastic and encouraging.

(Additionally, should a player prefer their character or some object related to them be unreadable, then it would be presented as garbled, or redacted text.)

Momo (yesdoubt) 2025-12-04 Luxury Treat (special treatment) Rather than appear hidden, scattered, or otherwise inconvenient to pick up, all of Momo's coins gather themselves all into one tidy little pile. They're even neatly stacked and organized.

Resting atop the pile is a vase, about 40cm tall. It is... strangely decorated, with the shapes of a whole assortment of small animals molded onto it, making it a rather lumpy entity. All the animals are life-sized, comprised mostly of mice, insects (butterflies and beetles), and sparrow-sized birds. There is no blank space, the entirety of the vase comprised of little animal sculptures(?). It is pure white.

It also comes with an assortment of freshly cut flowers (they can be any sort, real or not, but there's a variety). They are at the peak of blooming, and will remain that way indefinitely, without water or any other intervention. If removed, they will begin to decay at the normal pace.

In actuality, anything that's put into the vase is kept 'fresh'. Objects (living or dead) are placed into a kind of stasis, sustained in their current state. While it seems to have been designed for the purpose of displaying flowers, it could be used to store other perishables. Being vase-shaped might make this a bit awkward, but it will work. It is reasonably roomy on the inside.

(Does the whole of something have to be in the vase to trigger this effect? No, as indeed the intended flower-use has the blossoming parts extend well above the interior of the vase. However, the greater percentage of the object that's outside the vase, the weaker the effect. Imagine a refrigerator door left open: it's still producing cold, but is unable to cool anything as efficiently as with the door closed.

But so long as something is at least a bit in the vase, its overall condition will be an equivalent amount of maintained.)

For some reason, using the vase leaves a person feeling guilty. Only a little, and it passes quickly.

Lauralae (rakta) 2025-12-07 Luxury Treat (special treatment) On one occasion an odd circlet appears instead. Made of some jet-black substance, it's cold to the touch and lightweight. It's very intricately made, the design full of little whorls and knots, details that are only apparent up close.

While it also serves as just a fine piece of jewelry, it also fills the wearer with a commanding presence. Sometimes, at least. It's potent enough that once per day the wearer can make a request of someone else... and it will be obeyed. Casual asks will become unassailable demands- insofar as it's possible, at least. Trying to command something physically impossible will fail outright and use up the day's opportunity.

(There is also something of a time limit on the orders placed. The impetus to complete a task will wear off once it's complete, or an hour has passed. The person set on a task will remember the experience, but in the moment it will feel completely natural and absolutely pressing that they do this specific thing.

It's also one use per day, not per wearer- so it can't be passed around to trigger the same effect repeatedly. It will work for whoever wears it, however.)

Wriothesly (trounce) 2025-12-16 Is this even a treat?, Small treat

1 pair of kitschy whale slippers (2); is it okay if they turn up in this thread...

1 pair of kitschy and even uglier slippers (2)

1 small treat of the ugliest sleepwear set (25)

The slippers may absolutely make their entrance (dramatic or otherwise) in a thread, to be appropriately appreciated.

The other fine pair of slippers and adorable sleepwear can also turn up similarly, or sneak unsuspiciously into Wriothesley's wardrobe, as though they'd been there all along. It's already getting cold out there, so they should hopefully help in warding off the chill.

https://alogos.dreamwidth.org/7832.html?thread=934808#cmt934808

Wriothesly (trounce) 2025-12-29 Luxury Treat (special treatment) The glasses arrive perched on top of the other strange gift- that of a heavy, metallic wardrobe. Although textured to look like it was carved (and with plenty of intricate details, at that) from wood, it's cold to the touch and too dense to be naturally anything. While there's plenty of space to store existing clothes, it will also manifest entire outfits of its own accord. If there's space, it will produce something new every 1-3 days.

The clothing itself is not of great quality. Very fast-fashion, synthetic. So synthetic, in fact, that it dissolves entirely within a day or two of being produced. No matter how delicately the material is treated, it will reduce itself to a lump of oddly gooey shreds inside of 48 hours- hopefully not while anyone is wearing it! This trash is meant to be discarded, and has no reusability.

Sizing and style: it will attempt to imitate whatever real clothes are put inside the wardrobe. It may take it a few tries to get it right, and it will never fit as well as the real thing, as though it had been 'standardized' to a shape that's perfect for no one. Without examples, the wardrobe will produce a variety of sizes, all in the shade of utilitarian grey. There will be pants, dresses, robes, shirts- everything you need, as long as you don't need it for long. But why do you need to keep anything around, when it will make something new soon enough?

Hubert (bloodypath) 2026-01-02 Luxury Treat (Special Treatment-ish)

Luxury Treat - Special Treatment-ish. Scorpion-rhino-boy has had a hard time and I would his coldblooded ass to have a blursed self-heating rock of some kind to lay on, please

After all he's been through, does Hubert not deserve a warm rock of his very own?

And he'll find it delivered right inside his very doorstep (right inside, so be careful tripping over it). It is roughly Hubert-sized if not precisely Hubert-shaped (it is rock-shaped). Of a nice sandy color and a pleasing texture, it would invite any lizard (or sensitive rhino-scorpions) to get right to basking.

Especially because it is already warm and is permanently warm. Its temperature does fluctuate throughout the day, with it being hottest at night, and less hot during the daytime- but it's always giving off some amount of heat. There does not seem to be any way of adjusting it, or turning it off, but thankfully it never seems to get hot enough to cause injury.

The marvels of mysterious technology!

Verso (versoul) 2026-01-08 Luxury Treat (Special Treatment)

Special treatment please! But can I request that it involve alcohol? (Considered getting 4 more wine glasses but this is more fun.)

Indeed, why settle for a mere four (more) glasses of wine a day (with some accompanying incidental praise) when one could have an entire wine fridge?

That is, it's a mini-fridge designed to hold wine. It is capable of keeping whatever's placed in it cool (without even being plugged in), but it's made for wine. It even arrives fully stocked! The bottles are all labeled, branded, though it matches nothing that's sold in Karteria (or Kelesis) today. The writing isn't in any familiar language, and they're decorated with artistic representations of mountains, rivers- nature in general. They have logos of dogs, deer, dragonflies.

Verso is free to empty the fridge at his own pace. As long as there's space in there, one new bottle will appear every week. If the fridge is full (of wine or other cold-seeking objects) it'll skip that week and try again later.

The quality itself: it's good stuff (for those who care to appreciate wine). To anyone who's been drinking from the replenishing wine glasses, they could notice that it's of similar stock. These are just the full bottles. Occasionally, however, a particular bottle will be uncommonly potent. While it will taste similar, it will have a strength closer to that of vodka, or other hard liquor.

The normal bottles have no extra effect. It's good wine! If anything bad happens it's not their fault! For the special bottles, however... if truth lies in wine, these draughts are the opposite. Anyone who drinks from them (more than a drop, don't need to down a whole glass) will be unable to tell the truth for the next hour. Shouldn't be a problem for Verso though, right...

Additional Souls

[edit | edit source]

Additional souls can be obtained with Rewards points.

These come with flavour text. So far, the following have been received:

Character Date Type Flavour
Momo (yesdoubt) 2025-08-10 Fungi (Wild)
What Momo hears is particularly unearthly... or particularly earthly, to view it another way. It's like his ears are being clogged with something, distorting everything around him into a dull, oddly-meaty throb. Is it a pulse, or some other kind of beat? It grows louder, closer, and conveys with it a sense of ominous suffocation, as though his own heart, his own essence was being drowned out along with the rest of the world.... It vanishes just as quickly as it came, and the sudden clarity in its wake might be its own form of disorienting. Altogether the experience only lasts for a few minutes, but it might have felt like it took much longer.[1]
Johann (hallankind) 2025-08-06 Spectral
wow it turns up i'm not doing flavor text here either [2]
Northly (northling) 2025-09-01 Arthropoda
Congratulations to Northly on her acquisition of one(1) stray Arthropoda soul!

Along with the immediate pain at the soul's acquisition, she will hear a quiet skittering, chittering sort of noise in the back of her head. It will feel like something is crawling in there too, a disconcerting sort of invasion, as though her bones were being trampled upon by an uncertain amount of very small, very light legs. It's itchy in the worst sort of way, and the sound builds into a hiss. It's hard to tell whether it's from one or many throats, or whether it's a throat at all that's producing it.

After a handful of minutes it fades away, and Northly is free to enjoy her new soul buddy.[3]
Mel (opposed) 2025-10-18 Carnivora
There is always space for more Horrors....

Alongside the considerable discomfort of the wayward soul slotting itself into place, are voices, just at the edge of Mel's hearing. Beyond her hearing, really, as the conversation slips in and out of range.

"--too simple, too limited..." "...even raising predators for?"

"...settled..." "--can be culled, but we can't send just cattle--"

Even in its near-unintelligibility, it provokes a sense of immense frustration. But there's nothing to sink your teeth into.

[4]
Hubert (bloodypath) 2025-10-18 Perissodactyla (wild)
In addition to the physical discomfort, Hubert will also find himself abruptly unconscious. How delightful! He could probably use the rest; holidays are exhausting in their own way.

Hubert should also be used to by now, the carnival version of the Katalyth music. Here it is again, invading his dreams. With it is a bubbling of voices all around him, the conversation of a crowd, just out of sight.

...maybe this will help? Even if, oh-

I think we're too late? ❌ He's already 🥺

We can't take it back         that's okay ...

Please take good care of it. 🥹Please take good care of us

...somehow the emojis are audible too. But it ends, and Hubert may awaken, free to explore whatever the hell just happened.

[5]
Vanitas (bleude) 2025-10-24 Spectral
Vanitas really out there enhancing his lifestyle....

It's barely audible- mostly inaudible, really- but in the midst of that pain as the second soul settles in, there's voices whispered deep in his head.

"Where do you think-- ...? No one's seen-- .....for years now."

"....this again... but it would be convenient-- ...our own."

With it, even sharper than the pain, is an absolute wrath, a suffocating blackness of utter hatred, but you drown in it before you can drown anything else.[6]
Elijah (viciousabyss) 2025-10-24 Cephalopoda
Eli living the luxurious life here, complete with a new soul friend....

When the soul arrives, alongside the requisite pain of its implantation- are voices, just at the edge of his hearing.

"--you to stop talking with it. It's not real debate- just imitation--"

"...when you-- ...it almost looks like it's still intelligent."[7]
Pom (feistro) 2025-11-22 Carnivora
What is a Pom for, but to fit ever more dogs inside?

There's the pain, as this strange new soul slips its way in, finding a home for itself in the cold of the world. But with it are voices, faint and fading, as lost as everything else it had once been.

"...third time this week. Is this batch faulty... ...the implantation?"

"...back yet... but what do you bet we're only using these because there's so many?"

You feel trapped. The words mean progressively less to you until there's nothing left.[8]
Pal (megatheorem) 2025-11-29 Cnidaria (wild)
A pal to cnidarias the world over, or at least to this specific wayward soul. A sharp pain comes with its implantation, as though on the receiving end of intangible stingers.

In the midst of it is sound, sharp and oddly clear, though piecemeal, as though only fragments have survived of some much greater piece.

It's something old. The conversation clips in and out, but the speakers (at least two of them, but it's hard to tell for certain) sound insistent, even desperate. What they're saying is incomprehensible. But it doesn't feel like gibberish; it's a language, but not the one currently spoken on Pathos, the one that's been implanted inside every Augmented One to ease communication with the locals.

You feel... detached. This has very much to do with you, but you're indifferent to it. You're patient, and in their haste they will leave an opening. All you have to do is wait.

....The sound cuts off, taking the foreign impressed emotions with it, leaving nothing behind but a sore neck and a new friend.[9]
Dorothea (reprisings) 2025-12-02 Arthropoda
The pain is sudden, the sharpness coming all at once, a throb that's in itself almost deafening. At the edges of it are words, like a conversation held at Dorothea's periphery.

"...surprised, you know. ...things, but the souls, they're as large as...."

"... ...heard? ... ....most of the souls we're working with need... .....broken down, allowed to meld together to create something more..... using the result."

Your head is a mess, as if a thousand different voices were screaming at once, and not in any kind of unison. One after another they die out, until yours is the only one left.[10]
Tighnari (sighnari) 2025-12-05 Fungi (wild)
Has all that effort communing with the mushrooms paid off, or is it a coincidence that Tighnari has gotten himself worse than spored....

No voices accompany the arrival of this soul, only the pain, the burn as it attaches itself, demanding a place even if it had been welcomed in. Which isn't to say that there's not still sound of a sort, though it's more of a sensation. A moment of feeling connected to the ground beneath him, but in a way that's different from that of his Terra soul.

A sense of being connected to the whole of the island- even radiating beyond it, stretching towards the rest of Pathos, with the faintest of echoes coming from across the ocean. Immense pain comes with it, but it's also... detached, peculiarly endurable, agony turned into an abstract concept. A heightened awareness of Katalyth, of arcane radiation? This feeling of being connected passes quickly, but it leaves a lingering impression of the enormity of radiation in the world. And that it's old. New to Pathos, perhaps, but old.[11]
Rowan (ralliesprotests) 2025-12-06 Carnivora
Unrelated is the sudden attachment of a new soul, a piercing pain in their neck akin to having jaws closed around it. Somehow, rather than aggression it conveys desperation.

Alongside it is sound, a nearly-inaudible itch of it, in the back of their head.

"....to train. ....manageable than the first batch. Look, it stopped."

"...don't like it. It's eerie... ....malformed, I don't... ....getting out. ... ...the point, to be dangerous, but we need better failsafes than the Calling."[12]
Kaeya (shadowsincryo) 2025-12-27 Carnivora
There's so many wolves out there that need homes- and this one has found its way into Kaeya. As with all soul implantations there's pain, a spike of it that radiates through everything. And with it, sound.

The voices go in and out of range, a palpable frustration in them that doesn't compare to yours. You wish you had seen it. You feel resentful that you hadn't been there- and even more that you were left behind.

.....group escaped the other day. ... ...up when I got there, but you could- you... ...scared. It took me everything I had not to tell them I warned them!"

"...awful but maybe this means they'll start listening to us. ...day handling the beasts up close- but it's only when... ....mauled and loses samples that it...."[13]
Kaeya (shadowsincryo) 2026-01-01 Carnivora
Kaeya really taking to heart that a lone wolf is a sad wolf... no chance of loneliness now, with three in there.

The experience should be familiar by now. And maybe it's because this new soul implanted itself so soon after the last, but the conversation seems to be a continuation of the prior one.

"So... do you... .....out to collect them?"

"....trackers are putting ...the woods already. It's not ideal... ...to the city again, you know... ...a problem solved."[14]
Vincent (ofmisfortune) 2026-01-19 Carnivora
The pain of sudden soul implantation is sharp, a constriction within the throat, in more than the throat- though there's no physical cause.

Voices arrive with it, somewhere too close, but indistinct. You're being prodded by something you can't see, but you're not allowed to move enough to snap at it.

"....using these.... were more... ....look stable to you?

"....jaws just... do that... ...than the ones that are full of eyes. Why is it always eyes? Or teeth?"[15]
